Hire Achievers and On-Campus Internships

The Hire Achievers program is a campuswide initiative to assist departments that are new to hiring student employees, creating new part-time positions and on-campus internships, or increasing their student employee numbers. This program offers up to a 50% match in funding these positions. Our goal is to assist supervisors in strengthening the experiences of student employees in on-campus positions and to enhance their preparation for professional work by connecting student employment to the IUPUI Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PULs).  

  • Hire Achievers—Creating New Positions or Increasing Number of Students Working

    Application Process

    Departments must apply and be accepted to participate in the Hire Achievers program. Applications open on August 1, 2018, and close on August 31, 2018. Direct supervisors must complete the application to be considered for this program. Notification of acceptance will be sent to applicants no later than September 3, 2018.

    Reimbursement Details

    Students who do not have work-study funding:

    • A 50% match of salary for up to 15 hours per week at a maximum pay rate of $10.15 per hour.

    Students who have work-study awards:

    • The departmental 25% required portion will be reimbursed for each student salary for up to 15 hours per week at a maximum pay rate of $10.15 per hour.

    Maximum Reimbursement

    • No participating entity (e.g., department, office, work area) will receive a reimbursement more than $11,000 in total for approved positions. The maximum reimbursement per position will not exceed $2,741.

Job Description Training and Workshops

The Office of Student Employment is now offering training sessions and workshops for how to write job descriptions. This process can be challenging and frustrating at times, but it is an important part of hiring a new employee. Our goal is to help you understand all of the parts that go into a good job description and to simplify the writing process for you.
  • How to Write a Job Description Training

    Attend this training session to learn how to go through the steps of writing job descriptions from beginning to end. This will be offered on a variety of dates and times throughout the year. Please feel free to attend as many times as you would like. It never hurts to review the steps.

    Feel free to bring a job description with you, but please keep in mind that one-on-one assistance with job descriptions should be taken to the Job Descriptions workshop.

  • Job Descriptions Workshop

    This workshop is designed to be a resource to ask questions about job descriptions or JagJobs. It is a come-and-go event meant to provide one-on-one assistance as necessary. Feel free to bring your computer to work on job descriptions to receive help as needed or come prepared with questions. You can attend as many of these workshops as you would like.

    Keep in mind that this is not meant to be an overall training program. If you need a full training session, please attend the How to Write a Job Description training.

    This will be offered on a variety of dates and times and will become a regular workshop. Please check our events page for the next available date.

Brown Bag Series

The Office of Student Employment offers numerous training opportunities on student employment at IUPUI, including supervision topics, student employment refreshers, policies and regulations, and last but not least, the Federal Work-Study Program. Check out the list of topics and our calendar for opportunities to register. These workshops are free and open to the entire IUPUI community.

  • All Things Work-Study

    These sessions are ideal for departments, supervisors, and payroll/eDoc processors who employ students using Federal Work-Study Program funds. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of the structure and definition of the work-study program, as well as the full hiring process for students who would like to use their work-study funds toward a position in your office or department. Contacts, resources, and timelines for the program will be provided. We will also do our best to answer any questions you may have. Sign up to attend one of our July or August 2017 sessions.

  • Supervisor Training Sessions

    These training sessions are designed to give anyone who oversees student employees the opportunity to learn more about their roles and to dive more deeply into a variety of topics. Each session will cover a different topic and will have different activities planned. The upcoming training sessions are:

    • Would You Work for You?—December 6, 2017
    • Ask the Students (a panel facilitated by a student employee)—January 11, 2018
    • Customer Service Skills—March 28, 2018
    • Generations in the Workplace—May 9, 2018
    • Bullying—July 11, 2018

  • Student Employee Appreciation and Engagement: Preparing for NSEA Week

    Prepare for National Student Employee Appreciation (NSEA) Week at IUPUI, which is scheduled for April 9–13, 2018. This session will provide supervisors and departments with strategies for appreciating the contributions of student employees and will offer suggestions to increase student employee engagement during NSEA Week and all year round! Workshops will be offered in January 2018.

Jaguar Supervisor Training

Supervisors of student employees encounter unique challenges and opportunities to support students as employees and employees as students. They must also learn how to promote work, life, and school balance for their student employees. The Jaguar Series training program focuses on creating a balance between those roles and on guiding supervisors to confidently and competently create a meaningful work experience for IUPUI students.

  • Training Series Information

    Interactive and Action-Driven Sessions

    The Jaguar Series is a three-part hybrid training that covers a variety of topics to assist in developing knowledge and skills. Each series will be completed consecutively, and new titles, swag, and awards will be given at the end of each. Participants will learn how to:

    • Enhance student employment programs or positions and clarify roles and responsibilities
    • Remain in compliance with university, state, and federal policies that impact and guide student employment
    • Practice student employee supervision techniques through role-plays, scenarios, and best practice sharing
    • Strengthen communication and create positive supervisory relationships with student employees
    • Support student employee academic, professional, and career development
    • Integrate academic and career relevance into assignments, positions, and programs
    • Understand and adapt supervisor delegation styles, as well as establish realistic and challenging expectations
    • Demonstrate student employee appreciation and enhance overall student employee engagement
    • Utilize performance management tools and processes that emphasize student employee reflection and skill development

    Participants

    The Jaguar Series training program is designed specifically for IUPUI staff and faculty who:

    • Currently supervise student employees
    • May supervise student employees in the future
    • Work collaboratively with student employees
    • Administer the student employee hiring and payroll process
    • Coach others who supervise and work with student employees

  • Series One

    Series 1

    This is considered the introduction course and will provide the foundation for participants moving forward. It will take place over the course of six weeks with a variety of online and in-classroom learning. Some examples of topics covered include:

    • The hiring process
    • Onboarding and orientation for new employees
    • How to foster employee engagement
    • Understanding student employees and how to manage employees
    • Workplace bullying
    • Coaching 

    Registration information

    Series 1 will be offered in February and September. The next available start date is February 19, 2018. Meetings will occur every Friday, 2:00–3:30 p.m., with the last meeting on March 23, 2018. Location is to be determined. Follow the link below to register.

  • Series Two

    Series 2

    This is the second part of the series and will dive more deeply into some of the Series 1 topics and will cover some new ones. The topics in each series get more advanced as you proceed. It will take place over the course of five weeks with a variety of online and in-classroom learning. Some examples of topics in Series 2 include:

    • Motivation and collaboration in the workplace
    • Conflict
    • Evolving the workplace
    • Recruiting strategies
    • Development for you and your student employees

    Registration Information

    Please be aware that Series 1 must have been completed before registering for Series 2. Series 2 will be offered in April and mid-October. The next available start date is April 16, 2018. Registration information will be offered at the completion of Series 1.

  • Series Three

    Series 3

    This is the final session for the Jaguar Series and will cover the deepest categories of topics. It will take place over the course of five weeks with a variety of online and in-classroom learning. At the completion of this series, you will earn the title of Champion Supervisor along with other perks, exclusive development opportunities, and a special award. Some examples of topics covered in Series 3 include:

    • Diversity of employees
    • Employees with disabilities
    • Recruiting methods
    • Ethics and law in recruiting on campus
    • International student employees

    Registration Information

    Please be aware that Series 2 must have been completed before registering for Series 3. Series 3 will be offered in July and late November. The next available start date is July 2, 2018. Registration will be offered at the completion of Series 2.
