Frequently asked questions

In the new platform, you can see any jobs that have been posted within Handshake, even if they are on the other side of the country. To narrow the jobs visible to your location, use the "location" filter at the top of the jobs tab and search for your preferred city, then use the distance bar below it to adjust the mile radius.

The Q & A tab can be used by students to ask career-related questions that can be answered by students, employers, or alumni from across Handshake's network. Additionally, you can answer questions posted by other students if you have a helpful response. You can find more information about the Q & A page here.

This is an optional tab that you can use to find other students with public profiles across Handshake's network. This may be helpful if you would like to know more about a company and want to reach out to students who previously worked there. Please note that you must use the community privacy settings to use this feature.

With our new platform, jobs are no longer affiliated with specific schools. All approved jobs are now visible to all qualifying students.

If you need to withdraw an application after submitting, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Jobs tab from the top menu bar, and then select Applications. This will show you any jobs that you have previously applied for.
  2. Select the job that you would like to withdraw your application from. This will pull up the job details.
  3. Scroll down slightly until you see a vertical red bar showing Application Submitted. Below this, you will see the option to withdraw your application.
  4. Select Withdraw to confirm

Yes! Handshake mobile is available for free on IOS and Android devices. Using the app is a great way to continue your job search when you do not have access to a computer. We recommend that you use your computer during your profile set up and make sure that you have uploaded your documents prior to applying for jobs using the app.

The messaging tool can be used if you would like to send messages to other students, career services staff, or employers. If you are using the "employers" privacy setting, employers will be able to message you, but only if they have at least an 80% trust score, or if you have already applied to a job with their company.

If you are using the "community" privacy setting, you can send or receive messages from students and alumni across the platform in addition to employers. This may be useful if you would like to know more about a company and would like to message other students who have worked there. You can find more information about messaging here.

Employers have the option to notify students about their application within Handshake. There are seven statuses employers can use. However, not all employers will use this feature. You can visit this resource to see what different application statuses mean.

If you are wondering about the status of your application, we recommend following up with the employer 7–14 days after the application deadline. If the start date is before the application deadline, then we recommend following up with the employer 7–14 days after you submitted your application. Refer to this follow-up guide for tips on how to email an employer about your application.
